How to stop watching porn

To stop watching porn, decide why you want to stop, learn when it usually happens, make it harder to reach at those moments, and plan what you will do instead when the urge comes. Don't rely on willpower alone. Change your phone and your routine, and talk to someone you trust. A blocker such as Apple's free Screen Time filter or Open Book (our app, with free basic blocking) is one of those changes, not a cure.

Updated October 2026. We make Open Book, an iPhone blocker with free basic blocking and an optional paid Strict mode. This guide is practical advice, not medical advice, and it doesn't diagnose or treat anything.

How to quit porn: the steps

1. Write down why you want to stop

Be specific. "I want my evenings back" or "I don't want to hide this from my partner" is easier to hold on to than "it's bad for me". Keep the list where you will see it at the hard moment, such as a note on your phone's lock screen or in your wallet. Read it when you notice an urge, before you decide anything.

2. Notice when it happens

For a week, jot down each time you watch or nearly watch: the time, where you were, what you were doing and how you felt. You may see a pattern. It might be in bed with the phone, late at night, alone at home, bored, stressed after work, or after scrolling social media. The pattern tells you where to put the next steps.

3. Make it harder to reach at those moments

Put the friction at the moments from step 2, when you would otherwise act without thinking.

  • Move the phone. Charge it outside the bedroom and use a cheap alarm clock instead.
  • Turn on Apple's filter. Go to Settings, Screen Time, Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn it on. Then tap App Store, Media, Web, & Games, Web Content, and select Limit Adult Websites. It is free and built in. Our Safari guide has the exact steps.
  • Block the apps that lead there. If a social app or a second browser is where it starts, block it. Open Book does this with Apple's own picker, and turns on the adult-content filter in Safari at the same time. See how Open Book blocks porn on iPhone.
  • Hand over the keys. Ask someone you trust to set your Screen Time passcode, so turning off Apple's filter takes a conversation instead of a tap. In Open Book, stopping takes a 30-second wait, and the optional paid Strict mode can lock blocking for days.
  • Cover the rest of the phone. Explicit music and video, apps by age rating and nude images in Messages have their own settings. Our adult content guide lists them.

4. Plan what you will do when the urge comes

Decide in advance what you will do for the next 15 minutes, so you are not deciding at the worst moment. Keep the plan short and physical: leave the room, put the phone in another room, take a shower, go for a walk, make food, or text a friend. Write your plan next to your list of reasons.

5. Tell someone

Secrecy makes it harder. Telling one person you trust, such as a friend, a partner or a sibling, takes away some of the weight and gives you someone to text at the hard moment. You don't have to share details. "I'm trying to quit something and might text you when it's hard" is enough. Some people prefer a group of others working on the same thing, online or in person.

6. Count days, and plan for slips

A count gives you something to protect. Pick a first goal, such as 30 days, then set the next one. If you slip, don't throw the count away in disgust and binge. Write down what happened, using step 2, change one thing, and start again the same day. A slip is information about where your plan has a gap.

Open Book's 30-day challenge counts each day that blocking stays on with no pause, and sends a short note after days 7, 14, 21 and 30. It measures the block, not you, but keeping the block on is part of the plan.

7. Fill the time it used to take

Look at your notes from step 2 and plan something for those hours. If it happened late at night, set a time to put the phone away and have something else to do in bed, such as a paper book. If it happened when bored at home, plan where you will be instead. Quitting leaves a gap, and it is easier to fill it on purpose.

Porn addiction and recovery: when to get more help

People say "porn addiction" to describe use that feels out of their control. Professionals disagree about whether to call it an addiction, and you don't need a label to decide you want to stop. If you keep trying and can't stop, or porn is hurting your work, relationships, sleep or mood, talk to a licensed therapist or counselor, ideally one who works with compulsive sexual behavior. A good one won't shame you. An app can be one part of that, alongside the people and habits around you.

Where a blocker fits, and where it doesn't

A blocker makes porn harder to reach at the moments you would otherwise act on autopilot. It can't stop you if you set out to get around it, because anyone who controls their own phone can turn a blocker off. That is why the steps above matter more than any app.

Open Book uses Apple's Screen Time, and basic blocking is free. It filters adult websites in Safari, blocks the apps, app categories and websites you pick, and keeps a private Activity log on your iPhone. Stopping blocking takes a 30-second wait that gives an urge time to pass, and you can choose a short pause instead. Strict mode, an optional paid add-on at $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year, can lock blocking for 1, 3, 7 or 30 days. It uses no VPN, does not collect or share your browsing history, and has no partner, lessons or community. If you want a structured program or a group, our QUITTR alternatives page covers apps built around lessons and community. If you want someone else to see your activity, see Ever Accountable alternatives. For a side-by-side of blockers, see the best porn blocker for iPhone.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to stop watching porn?

There is no fixed timeline, and it differs from person to person. A set goal, such as 30 days, gives you something concrete to aim for. When you reach it, set the next one.

Can a porn blocker stop me from watching porn?

It can make porn harder to reach, especially at moments when you would otherwise act without thinking. It can't stop you if you decide to get around it, because anyone who controls their own phone can turn a blocker off. Use it alongside a plan for urges and someone to talk to.

Is there a free way to block porn on iPhone?

Yes. Apple's Screen Time has a free Limit Adult Websites setting for Safari. Open Book's basic blocking is also free: it turns on that filter and blocks the apps, app categories and websites you pick, with no VPN. Its Strict mode is an optional paid add-on.

When should I get help to quit porn?

If you keep trying and can't stop, or porn is hurting your work, relationships, sleep or mood, talk to a licensed therapist or counselor. You don't need to call it an addiction first, and this guide doesn't diagnose anything.
